Local MBCT Class Begins Sept. 9
HELP PREVENT DEPRESSION with Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy
An eight-week course designed to help people who are prone to repeated bouts of depression and chronic unhappiness
In this course cognitive therapy principles are combined with meditative practices and attitudes that are based on the cultivation of mindfulness. Participants become acquainted with the modes of the mind which often characterize mood disorders, while simultaneously learning to develop a new relationship to them.
Practices taught are designed to help participants become familiar with the workings of the mind, notice times of risk for getting caught in old habits of mind that reactivate downward mood spirals, and explore ways of releasing oneself from those old habits.
The approach is referred to as MBCT and was developed by Zindel Segal, Mark Williams and John Teasdale. It is based on Jon Kabat-Zinn’s Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program.
The course consists of eight weekly 2-hour classes, and includes specific work to be done at home between classes using CDs that support participants’ developing mindfulness practices.
Class 1: Automatic Pilot
Class 2: Dealing with Barriers
Class 3: Mindfulness of the Breath
Class 4: Staying Present
Class 5: Allowing and Letting Be
Class 6: Thoughts are Not Facts
Class 7: How Can I Best Take Care of Myself
Class 8: Using What Has Been Learned to Deal with Future Moods
